Description of the Workshop

The development of creative traits in an individual is of fundamental importance for excellence in science and technology. A wonderful way to develop the inner skills of concentration, confidence, innovation and collaboration is to learn music and fine arts – in the Indian way. Composing music is regarded as one of the most creative tasks, but little is known about the scientific principles behind creating music in various genres of Indian music, such as thumris, ghazals, film and folk music. Most of Indian music has its roots in Indian ragas, but the approach for scoring music in each these forms are very varied and largely dependent on the creative ingenuity of the composer. This online workshop explores a structured approach towards the composition of various genres of Indian music, establishing explainable relations between the compositions and their common root – the Indian ragas. The workshop intends to elucidate the fact that popular music in Indian genres is not far removed from raga music – instead, imbibing the knowledge of ragas combined with the understanding of these principles, enables even a less experienced student of music to develop original compositions which are melodious, uplifting and aesthetically rich. The overarching vision of this workshop is to demonstrate that learning music can be used as an enabler to develop the core strengths towards a fulfilling career in science and technology.
