Kgpian Samir Kamat Heads India's DRDO
It is a celebratory time with Kgpian Dr. Samir V Kamat at the helm of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO). Kamat has been appointed as the Secretary, Department of Defence Research & Development (DDR&D) and Chairman of DRDO with effect from August 26.
The 1985 batch alumnus from the department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering has been associated with DRDO since 1989. His key area of work involved microstructure and mechanical property correlations in advanced materials, such as particulate reinforced metal matrix composites, ceramic matrix composites, aluminum-lithium alloys, etc.
In recent times, Dr. Kamat has made significant contributions to the development of rare earth permanent magnet technology in the Defense Materials Research Laboratory (DMRL). This is being supplied to various sister DRDO labs.
Dr. Kamat was conferred the Distinguished Alumnus Award by IIT Kharagpur in 2018.
