Are Medicine and Biomedical Sciences the Future of the IITs?

When IIT Kharagpur introduced the idea of medical education in 2007, it was novelty in an education system that has a global reputation for its excellence in science, technology and management. While the medical program is yet to begin, OPD services have been initiated at the superspeciality hospital of IIT Kharagpur serving an extensive catchment area across several states. And it is only the beginning.

In the 1990s Vinod Gupta School of Management at IIT Kharagpur paved the way of management education in the IIT system. Repeating that history, Kgp paved the way for making another transformation — medical education at the IITs. 

 

Recently IIT Kanpur and IIT Guwahati followed the path and laid the foundation for new schools of medical sciences and technology. Other IITs are setting up their medical programs through collaborations with AIIMS. These include IIT Roorkee, IIT Delhi and IIT Jodhpur. While IIT Kharagpur is getting closer to offering an MBBS program, the other IITs are offering graduate and research programs in biomedical sciences and engineering, medical technology  and innovation among others. 

 

IIT Kharagpur already offers three integrated MSc-PhD programmes – medical physics; molecular medical microbiology; nuclear medicine – a master’s in medical science and technology; and a master’s in science (research). Read More
