IIT Kharagpur Professor Abhijit Mukherjee selected to receive the 2023 ELECTROSTEEL Jal Sevak Samman

Prof. Abhijit Mukherjee from the IITKGP Department of Geology and Geophysics has been selected for the ELECTROSTEEL Jal Sevak Samman, 2023 by the Electrosteel Castings Limited. The initiative was undertaken on the eve of World Environment Day to felicitate those who have carried out exemplary works in the water space and impacted life for the better. Prof. Mukherjee is the first Indian fellow of Geological Society of America (GSA) and the recipient of the prestigious Bhatnagar Prize 2020. He specializes in regional hydrogeology and groundwater contaminant transport, decadal-scale groundwater storage, groundwater-river-seawater interactions, groundwater quality evolution of the Ganges-Brahmaputra basin, Numerical and AI simulations of groundwater in the Indian subcontinent. He has also initiated application of artificial intelligence techniques in predicting future groundwater availability and pollution in different parts of India. Prof. Mukherjee has been recognized by the society for his pioneering research on increasing arsenic levels in Bengal. Prof. Mukherjee has been listed in the Indian Department of Science & Technology 75 Under 50: Scientists Shaping was given the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, one of the highest Indian science awards in 2020.
