Historic Milestone at IITKGP's Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (SPMSH)
IITKGP Foundation
IITKGP has successfully completed its very first surgery at the Shyama Prasad Mookerjee Institute of Medical Sciences & Research (SPMSH). Conducted under emergency conditions by Senior Surgeon Dr. R. K. Behera, the patient was discharged the same day—demonstrating the advanced capabilities of the new day-care surgical services. With its Operation Theatre now operational, SPMSH is on track to expand into a 220-bed Mission Mode IPD hospital, providing world-class medical care not only for students, faculty, and staff but also for the larger community.
Commenting on this breakthrough, Director Prof. Suman Chakraborty said, “From a minimally active polyclinic to a fully functional OPD, state-of-the-art diagnostics, and now in-patient surgery – this marks a decisive breakthrough after years of stalemate. SPMSH reaffirms our commitment to affordable, specialized healthcare and will serve as a testbed for next-generation innovations in medical technology."
This milestone is a shining example of IIT Kharagpur’s vision to integrate cutting-edge healthcare delivery with pioneering research and innovation, making a lasting impact on the region and beyond.
