IIT Kharagpur Steps into Medical Education with First MD Program

IITKGP Foundation

In a landmark move, IIT Kharagpur will soon begin its MD program under the newly established Dr. B. C. Roy Medical College, with clinical training to be conducted at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Super Speciality Hospital (SPMSH). The hospital has recently begun inpatient services, performed its first surgery, and is expanding to a 220-bed capacity to support this next phase. The program is expected to begin with around 20 seats once the NMC opens its formal application portal.

While the institute’s earlier plan to introduce an MBBS program has been deferred pending infrastructure expansion, the MD initiative marks a decisive first step in realizing a long-cherished vision. The foundation for this effort was laid in 2007, when President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated the Dr. B. C. Roy Multi-Speciality Medical Research Centre—envisioning an IIT that could bridge engineering, science, and medicine.

This development builds on the legacy of the School of Medical Science and Technology (SMST), which has led IIT KGP’s pioneering work at the intersection of engineering, biomedicine, and healthcare innovation. With the MD program, the institute is taking that vision from research to clinical education—positioning IIT Kharagpur as a national leader in technology-enabled medical training.

As IITKGP embarks on this transformative journey, alumni in healthcare, medical research, biotechnology, and entrepreneurship have a unique opportunity to contribute—through mentorship, partnerships, and philanthropy—to help shape India’s next generation of physician-scientists and medical innovators.

The KGP spirit of innovation continues—now with a healing touch.
