insti2IIT Kharagpur brings in compactors for old books after digitizing 1.6 lakh titles

KOLKATA: No matter how much you are in love with your old books and journals, it is time to move on and accept digitization as the order of the day. IIT Kharagpur has done just that in its central library and has done away with thousands of books and journals, which are among its oldest collection, after digitizing them. Doing away does not mean disposing them, of course. It just means stowing them away smartly so the new bookless phase can start and space can be created.

A total of 1.6 lakh printed books and journals have been digitized in the library already and many more thousands are to come in phases. As a result, at least 40,000 square feet of space has been created in just one floor of the library and no one is complaining. (Read More)
