Dr. Utsav Banerjee (B.Tech / ECE / 2013) is a Rising Star
Dr. Utsav Banerjee, a 2013 graduate of IIT Kharagpur with a major in ECE (Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering), currently serves as an assistant professor of electronic systems engineering at the Indian Institute of Sciences (IISc) in Bengaluru. He pursued his Master’s and PhD in ECE from MIT in 2017 and 2021, respectively. In December 2023, Dr. Banerjee was honored with the Intel Rising Star Faculty Award, standing as the sole recipient from India among 15 global awardees selected annually for leading advancements in technology research across various disciplines.
Leading the Secure Intelligent and Efficient Systems (SINESys) Lab at IISc, Dr. Banerjee's research primarily addresses security and privacy concerns in the Internet of Things (IoT). His focus lies in bridging the gap between theoretical concepts and practical implementation to develop efficient hardware solutions for secure edge computing. This domain necessitates intricate mathematics and sophisticated electronic circuit design, especially concerning silicon chip architecture, as the interconnectedness of components intensifies across diverse platforms.
Dr. Banerjee's accolades include the prestigious 2022 ABB Research Award in Honor of Hubertus von Grünberg, recognizing his work on integrated circuits and systems aimed at enhancing security in IoT and connected devices. His research endeavors to enhance data encryption efficiency while minimizing computational power, crucial for the optimization of secure computation processes. Through his endeavors, Dr. Banerjee envisions embedding high-performance, low-power hardware into devices for encrypted data transfer, contributing significantly to the advancement of technology. Moreover, his choice to conduct research at IISc underscores his commitment to leveraging India's premier research institute to make impactful contributions to society through teaching and research. Banerjee states, “Being in India, I still stay close to my roots and I have an opportunity to contribute back to my society through research and teaching.”
