AVATIKA: IIT Kharagpur's Biophilic Studio Pioneers Sustainable Innpovation and Well-being
On February 28, 2025, IIT Kharagpur Research Park in New Town, Kolkata, unveiled VATIKA: The Biophilic Studio, marking a significant advancement in sustainable innovation. This initiative integrates biophilic design principles—architectural approaches that connect occupants more closely to nature—to enhance well-being and productivity within built environments.

The inauguration ceremony commenced with a Prakriti Jagaran Yatra, a nature-awareness procession led by Shri Sourabh J. Sarkar, founder of KarmYog for the 21st Century. This spiritual prelude set the tone for the day's events, which included insightful panel discussions on biophilic innovation and sustainability.
Dr. Khanindra Pathak shared his experiences with bio-reclamation using vetiver system technology and rapid forest regeneration through the Miyawaki method, emphasizing the importance of integrating natural elements into innovation ecosystems. Shri Sourabh J. Sarkar outlined the vision of establishing a million Vatikas (learning gardens or biophilic studios) nationwide to bring nature closer to communities, aiming to generate employment and foster environmental stewardship.
The event also featured a podcast titled "Technology for Self-Exploration and Integral Well-being," streamed live from VATIKA. This conversation between Interim Director Dr. Amit Patra and Shri Sarkar underscored the studio's role as a platform for innovative dialogue and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Biophilic design, which incorporates natural elements into built environments, has been shown to enhance cognitive function, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being. The integration of such designs in urban settings can also address ecological challenges, support biodiversity, and promote sustainable development.
The inauguration of VATIKA represents a new chapter in the quest for sustainable innovation, establishing IIT Kharagpur as a hub for biophilic design, interdisciplinary collaboration, and integral well-being. Through its focus on nature-based solutions, VATIKA is poised to lead the way in fostering a deeper connection between humanity and the environment.
IITKGP Alums' Leap Finance Secures $100M Debt from HSBC to Expand Student Lending

Leap Finance, the student lending division of Indian edtech company Leap, has secured $100 million in debt financing from HSBC's ASEAN Growth Fund. This capital will be utilized to broaden Leap Finance's services across additional U.S. states, enhance university partnerships, and strengthen its presence in India, its primary market.
Established in 2019 by IIT Kharagpur alumni Vaibhav Singh and Arnav Kumar, Leap offers a range of products catering to overseas education, including LeapScholar, LeapFinance, GeeBee, and Yocket. Leap Finance provides collateral-free, USD-denominated loans covering the full cost of international study for students pursuing postgraduate degrees abroad. This funding follows Leap's recent $65 million Series E equity raise led by Apis Partners, bringing the total equity and debt raised since inception to over $400 million.
The study-abroad sector has faced challenges due to regulatory changes in key destinations like Canada, Australia, the U.S., and the U.K., impacting international student enrollments. Despite these headwinds, co-founder Vaibhav Singh remains optimistic about the U.S. as a major destination for Indian students.
