The Texas AI Learning Center (TX AI-LC), an initiative of IIT Kharagpur Outreach Center, was formally inaugurated at the Tagore Center in Houston on August 21st, 2026, bringing together elected officials, academicians, industry leaders, entrepreneurs, researchers, community leaders, and other distinguished guests.
Consul General of India D. C. Manjunath emphasized the importance of U.S.-India collaboration and highlighted the major contributions of IIT alumni to the success of the Indian-American community. He noted that the Texas AI Learning Center and the IIT Outreach Center would build upon this legacy. U.S. Consul General Kathy Giles-Diaz highlighted the contributions of Indians, especially IITians, in strengthening US-India relations. She reflected on the significance of 250 years of American independence and 75 years of the IIT system.
Professor Suman Chakraborty, Director of IIT Kharagpur, discussed the continued expansion of the IIT Kharagpur global network, creating opportunities for worldwide collaboration in education, innovation, research, and societal impact. IITKGP alumnus Debjyoti Banerjee, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A &M, described the journey that led to the establishment of the IIT Outreach Center and the Texas AI Learning Center and outlined the future vision for programs and community engagement. Alice Lee, representing Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones, presented a Plaque of Recognition to the Texas AI Learning Center and the IIT Kharagpur Outreach Center for their contributions to education, workforce development, innovation, and community engagement. Distinguished IITKGP alumnus and Hall of Fame awardee, Arjun Malhotra, delivered the vote of thanks and acknowledged the distinguished guests, attendees, volunteers, organizers, and supporters who helped make the inauguration a success.
Throughout the event, speakers expressed deep appreciation to Asoke Deysarkar and Ruma Deysarkar for their extraordinary generosity, philanthropy, leadership, and steadfast commitment to the vision behind the Texas AI Learning Center and IIT Outreach Center. A special moment during the event was the celebration of Asoke Deysarkar for being inducted into the prestigious IIT Kharagpur Hall of Fame, honoring his years of leadership, service, and commitment to the IIT community.
The ceremony concluded with fellowship and networking, marking the beginning of a new chapter in AI education, outreach, innovation, and community impact in Texas in collaboration with IIT Kharagpur.
