Congratulations to the student-run IIT Kharagpur Young Innovators Program (YIP) for successfully completing the 5th edition of the program in 2023-24. Teams selected from a pool of 200 entries advanced through the initial round, with approximately 30 teams progressing to the subsequent stage. These teams gathered at IIT Kharagpur, participating in a thrilling 3-day event from January 30th to February 1st. Highlighting the program were crucial projects centered on Advanced Recycling And Waste Management, Smart Cities and Applications for Rural India, Innovation in food security, healthcare, and medicine, Metaverse and Applications: Shaping Digital Frontiers, Sustainable Growth and Climate Change, and Space Technology and Applications: Navigating the Cosmos. These projects introduced novel concepts with the potential to revolutionize the world and provide assistance to communities. Team “The Three Blues” from the Laxmipat Singhania Academy (Kolkata) clinched the title of the Best Project earning them a coveted cash prize of Rs 50,000 along with a prestigious memento.

The seeds of this idea to set up a Young Innovator Program started in 2015 with a group of students who first formed a Branding and Relations Cell (BARC) at IITKGP. The story of “how the YIP came to be” has been told by us before. Today, YIP is an established platform that showcases the transformative ideas of the curious minds to address global challenges through technological convergence and scientific innovations. It helps to promote a culture of innovation and creativity among students in science and technology at a very early stage of their academic journey by bringing together young, sharp minds from around the world to discuss current issues, unleash creativity, and work towards creating solutions. The global Science & Technology Competition aims to recognize the creative ability of school students in classes 8-12. Each team can have either 2 or 3 students from the same school and will be judged on the basis of ideation, research, feasibility, cost of construction, portability, authentication and originality. The competition aims to recognize the creative ability of school students studying in classes VIII-X only.
