On July 19th, 2024, IIT Kharagpur Director V.K. Tewari, Deputy Director Rintu Banerjee, and Prof. Debashish Chakravarty, Dean of Alumni Affairs, visited Google Headquarters to present Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai (B.Tech/1993/MME/NH) with an honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa). Additionally, Anjali Haryani Pichai (B.Tech/1993/ChE/SN Hall) was honored with the Distinguished Alumna Award. The IITKGP delegation was accompanied by distinguished alumni Vin Gupta (B.Tech/1967/AgE/RK) and Ron Gupta (B.Arch/1970/NH). In a tribute to his alma mater, Sundar Pichai adorned the entire Google campus with the IIT Kharagpur logo.
The event saw attendance from Sundar’s parents and his daughter, Kavya. Sundar's father became very emotional while speaking about his son, leading Sundar to give him a heartfelt hug. Ron Gupta recalled meeting Sundar in 2017 at KGP and Nehru Hall, noting the improvements made there since. He also discussed recent upgrades at SN/IG Hall with Anjali. Additionally, Ron mentioned the upcoming Global Nehru Hall meet in December 2024 and the Batch of 1970 reunion in January 2025 at IIT Kharagpur.
In the next few days, the IITKGP delegation will attend alumni networking events in San Francisco and Boston, and establish MoUs for collaborations with Tufts University and Bentley University.
