IITKGP Alumni Funded Hall Renovations: Some Updates

Here are some exciting updates on recent alumni-supported renovations across several residence halls at IITKGP. All updates were done in conslutation with student leaders in each hall and the warden of the hall. We will continue to need your support to ensure that the halls are upgraded for future IITKGPians.

SN/IG HALL

Thanks to a large generous donation from IITKGP alumna Chandralekha Singh and her spouse, Jeremy Levy, the SN/IG Hall now features a modernized common room, kitchen with new equipmewnt, updated toilets in NR block, along with several other newly renovated spaces completed over the past year.

RP HALL

RP hall renovation efforts were led by esteemed IITKGP alumni Krishna Ramawaswamy and Shivaji Samanta with generous donations from them of $25,000 and $10,000 respectively and additional donations ranging from $50 to $1,000 from many other RPites (Amit Mukhopadya, Atar Sen Mittal, Pradip & Enakshi Ghosh, Naseer Kazi, Shymal Sarkar, Khushroo Bagli, Mukund Bhakta, Pankaj  Doshi, Soman Chacko, Tridib Mazumdar,  Richard D'Souza, Gautam Siddhartha, Mitrajit Chatterjee, Saikat Mukherjee, Ullas Kamath, Naseer Kazi, Kishor Kunal, Harinder Jalli, Dhirendar Saxena, Samaresh Mohant, and Pavitra Chakravarti). Additional funds were raised by alumni located in India as well.

The funds raised were utilized to renovate the RP Hall Kitchen, Dining Room and associated spaces. This included adding higher capacity free-standing stainless-steel gas stoves, a ducted exhaust system, eight new stainless steel chulhas, an industrial grade refrigerator, and stainless steel tables in the dining hall.

Azad Hall

The renovation of the Azad Hall common room, kitchen, music room, and other shared spaces was made possible through the generous support of IITKGP alumni. Major contributions came from Suresh Nair ($20,000), Manoj Gandhi ($20,000), Rakesh Gupta ($10,000), Arun Sarin ($10,000), Purnendu Chatterjee ($10,000), Debu Chatterjee ($10,000), Rakesh Asthana ($10,500). In addition, many Azadians contributed amounts ranging from $10 to $4,000 (Mohan Mohanagopal, Utpal Banerjee, Ranadeep Dutta, Arvind Jain, Sunil Bhosekar, Mahesh Swaminathan, Hemant Latthe, Satya Das, Sanjay Khan, Chinmoy Banerjee, Umakanta Choudhury, Shubayu Rakshit, and Shreyas Melkote).

Patel Hall

Under the stewardship of Patel Hall warden Dr. P Sekhar Burada and student leaders, Patel Hall received financial support from donated funds to add a night canteen, juice bar, and coffe stop.

RK HALL

Led by Surajit Dasgupta, RK Hall has seen a number of upgrades. Funds donated by alums over the years were leveraged to complete the following upgrades:

  • a new chicken cleaning shed
  • a new fire fighting enclosure
  • mess upgrades - new food warmers (Bainmarie), stainless plate racks, new aluminium windows
  • new cricket pitch
  • new lighting for common grounds
  • a new bike shed extension
  • a new cooling system in the dining hall

Additional funds are now sought to help renovate the night canteen at RK Hall.

Nehru Hall

Since the inception of "Nehru-ka-Tempo" in 2021 April, about 100 Nehru Hall alumni have come together to complete renovations of 200 Single Room, Double Room, and the Music Room. The renovations have provided more workspace, upgraded furniture, and electrical connections in each room. These "new" rooms have raised the morals of Nehru Hall residents and are pushing other halls to begin their renovation projects. Another $105,000 is needed to renovate the remaining Single (21) and Double (16) rooms.

A contribution of $3500 lets you put your name on your old room; support the Nehru Hall fund today! Detailed information on the progress of renovation can be obtained from Shiladitya Basu (AE/1999) (shiladityab@gmail.com) or at the following link.
