IIT Kharagpur Foundation (USA) NEWSLETTER

Volume: 7.25.2026

Dear Reader,

In this newsletter, we spotlight Dr. Puja Majumder, Assistant Professor in IIT Kharagpur’s Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology, whose research uses cutting-edge structural biology and cryo-EM to unravel how bacteria defend themselves against viral attacks. Her internationally recognized work highlights the innovative research being undertaken by IITKGP’s new generation of faculty and its growing strength in the life sciences.

Dr. Puja Majumder: Unraveling the Molecular Machinery of Bacterial Immunity

Puja Majumder is a new Assistant Professor in the Department of Bioscience and Biotechnology at IIT Kharagpur, where she leads the Majumder Lab, a research group at the forefront of structural biology and bacterial immunity. Her work seeks to understand how bacteria defend themselves against viral attacks by uncovering the architecture and function of the molecular machines that power their immune systems.

Using cutting-edge techniques including cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), macromolecular crystallography, biochemistry, and molecular dynamics simulations, Dr. Majumder investigates the signaling pathways and defense mechanisms that bacteria deploy against bacteriophages. These ancient immune systems not only shed light on the evolution of immunity but also offer exciting possibilities for developing next-generation biotechnological and biomedical tools.

Before joining IIT Kharagpur, Dr. Majumder received international recognition for her research, earning both the Ludwig Cancer Research Postdoctoral Award and the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) Award. She spent four years as a research associate/scholar/scientist at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, USA.

As IIT Kharagpur continues to strengthen its leadership in the life sciences, Dr. Majumder represents a new generation of faculty advancing the frontiers of molecular biology through interdisciplinary research and state-of-the-art imaging technologies.
