Taking IIT Kharagpur’s Texas Vision to Governor Abbott
IIT Kharagpur’s vision for a stronger global presence took an important step forward with a meeting with Texas Governor Greg Abbott, where the team discussed the proposed Vishwa Houston IIT Outreach Center and the emerging Texas AI Center.
The Vishwa initiative is part of Director Prof. Suman Chakraborty’s vision to expand IIT Kharagpur’s global engagement and create new platforms for education, research, innovation and industry collaboration beyond the Kharagpur campus. Houston, with its deep connections to technology, energy, healthcare, aerospace and a large Indian-American community, offers a natural gateway for that vision in the United States.
At the heart of the initiative is the Texas AI Center, envisioned as a platform that can connect IIT Kharagpur’s expertise in artificial intelligence and advanced technology with Texas’s rapidly growing innovation ecosystem. The Center can serve students and professionals through education and training while creating opportunities for collaboration among IIT faculty, alumni, universities, companies and entrepreneurs.
The meeting with Governor Abbott underscored the potential of this India–Texas partnership. Texas has emerged as one of America’s leading centers for technology and innovation, while IIT Kharagpur brings decades of strength in engineering, science, entrepreneurship and interdisciplinary research.
The Vishwa Houston initiative also builds on the remarkable commitment of IITKGP Foundation President Asoke Deysarkar and his wife Ruma Deysarkar whose support for the Tagore Center Foundation provides an important foundation for IIT Kharagpur’s presence in Houston.
For IIT Kharagpur, the ambition is bigger than establishing another overseas center. It is about creating a global bridge—connecting Kharagpur’s knowledge and talent with the opportunities of Texas and the United States, while bringing new opportunities back to the Institute and its students.
The conversation with Governor Abbott marks another step in turning Director Chakraborty’s global vision into reality.
